Effective snow removal requires the right techniques and skills that come with years of experience. You want to hire a snow removal company that has been in business for long. Hence, prior to hiring ask them how long have they been providing these services? How skilled is their snow removal team? You may also check their website, and customer reviews and testimonials online. Ideally, you should hire a company with at least five plus years of experience.

2) Equipment used

Professional snow removal services in Edmonton must be well-versed with the latest tools and techniques required for the process. Make sure the snow removal company you hire has the right equipment to offer you good service.

3) Cost of Services

Everyone wants to avail reasonably priced services. Many business owners end up going for the lowest quote provided by various contractors. Remember, that prices should be affordable but not extremely low. There are countless stories about the hiring of inexpensive services that don’t show up or do a good job. It is best to go to a quality service provider, even if it means spending a few more dollars.

4) Reliability

Heavy snowfalls and snow storms do not come with a warning. Hence, you need commercial snow removal services that are available round-the-clock whether you have 5 cm snowfall or a 50 cm snowfall. Professional snow removal services in Edmonton offer a full-time as well as one-time service. Depending on your requirements, check whether or not you can rely on them during heavy snowfall. Additionally, ask them how they plan for snowstorms. Having this information helps in making an informed choice.

asphalt road maintenance

5 Tips for Asphalt Road Maintenance

Known for its strength and durability, asphalt is the most popular option for paving roads and driveways. However, roads are prone to degradation due to a variety of reasons. Temperature, harsh weather conditions, ineffective drainage system, and heavy traffic result in cracks and potholes, eventually degrading the road. While asphalt is known for surviving harsh temperatures and the heavy load, improper maintenance might reduce its lifespan. Hence, regular asphalt road maintenance is vital to reap the benefits of its long-lasting nature. We give you 5 tips for asphalt road maintenance.

1. Regular Inspection

While asphalt can survive heavy traffic, without proper maintenance a load of traffic can deteriorate your asphalt pavement. The best way is to reduce the load of heavy vehicles like garbage and delivery trucks on your driveway. However, that is not always possible. Hence, regular inspection is the best way to increase the span of your asphalt roads. Regular inspection allows timely detection and repair of any damage to the roads. You can hire asphalt maintenance service for regular inspection and repair.

2. Fix Drainage Problems

A poor drainage system can damage your road, costing you heavy repair or replacement. A poor drainage system allows water to reach the base surface and weaken it, resulting in cracks and potholes. Fixing these drainage problems by installing a drain inlet or underdrain may help. A good drainage system ensures a lasting asphalt road.

3. Snow and Ice Removal

During winters, the freeze-thaw cycle can crack your asphalt pavement. The accumulated water beneath the surface, resulting from the freeze-thaw cycle, combined with the weight of the traffic and high temperatures can degrade the road. Regular snow and ice removal is hence a vital requirement for maintaining asphalt roads. While you may not be able to regularly shovel snow, you must hire a professional snow and ice removal service for the best results.

4. Crack Filling and Sealcoating

If your asphalt roads have cracks, water can run through it and weaken the road. Moreover, heavy load of vehicles can also cause the cracks to widen. The crack filling can help combat this problem. It can be done by yourself, or you may hire a professional if the damage is severe. Sealcoating your asphalt surface every few years also helps in increasing its lifespan. It protects the surface from harmful elements and water seepage.

5. Sweeping

Apart from inspection and damage maintenance, regular cleaning also helps in maintaining your asphalt road. If not cleaned regularly, debris may accumulate within cracks and result in severe damage. Furthermore, regularly sweeping your asphalt pathways protect it from harmful elements. Hence, you must sweep your asphalt pavement on a regular basis to maintain its durability.

While asphalt is known for its long-lasting quality, all these asphalt road maintenance tips allow you to retain the strong and durable nature of asphalt. You can consult a professional asphalt paving service to help you with maintenance for your asphalt pavement.

Snow Removal in Edmonton

4 Snow Removal Tips For Home And Driveways

Snow removal isn’t fun, but it is a necessity when you live in the northern climes. And, while the white blanket of snow is a treat to the eye, it is ill-advised to allow even a meager amount of ice on your driveway to go unshoveled. Deep feets of piled up snow not only obstruct your daily routine but also cause injuries. The inevitable task of snow removal in Edmonton can be a backbreaker and can also cause damage to your home’s exteriors. To prevent muscle pulls and scratches on your property, utilize these tips for snow removal in Edmonton:

1) Prep yourself for Snow Removal

Commencing snow removal as soon as you wake up in the morning can cause harm to your body. Some amount of preparation is necessary for safe and efficient snow removal. Check the forecast at night to be well-prepared for clearing deep feet of snow in the case of a heavy shower. Dressing up in layers is vital to prevent the weather from affecting your health. Warm up by stretching your muscles to prepare your body for the tedious task of removing snow.

2) Pick the Right Tools and use the Right Techniques

There’s no doubt that snow removal is taxing and using the wrong tools can worsen the procedure for you further, resulting in pain and injury. Various types of shovels are available to make this process easier. Choose a shovel in consideration with your comfort and strength. Additionally, make sure the tool is not very sharp to avoid damaging your exterior landscape. Apart from the shovel, using the right techniques for snow removal is vital. Bend your knees and keep the blade close to you to reduce back strain. To deal with deep feet of snow, skim the top inches and then scoop up the bottom to ease the process. Furthermore, take frequent breaks while shoveling to curb health hazards.

3) Invest in a Snow Blower

Although shovel is a common snow removal tool, it may not be apt for piles of snow resulting from blizzards and snowstorms. Plus, shoveling is also time-consuming. If you live in a region with heavy snowfall, then it is best to invest in a snow blower. Make sure you keep your hands and feet away from moving parts when using the blower. A snow blower may demand some extra investment but will ensure a smooth and hassle-free snow removal.

4) Melt the Ice

The thawing cycle is an ongoing process during winters. The freezing and melting of snow results in a slippery ice sheet on your drives and sidewalks. This can be hazardous as anyone can slip and get injured. Hence, it is vital to melt the ice. Use salt or chemical deicers to unfreeze the ice. However, salt, as well as some chemical deicers, can have negative side effects on your landscape. Consider the weather and the products’ side effects, and use the one that best fits your situation.

5) Hire a Professional Service for Snow Removal Edmonton

Since Edmonton experiences a fair amount of snowfall each year, it is wise to hire a snow removal service. These professionals offer one-time as well as seasonal snow removal services to ensure your home and driveway are clear of snow during winters.

Parking Lot Maintenance

5 Tips To Protect Your Parking Investment

Parking lot maintenance needs to be a part of your regular maintenance schedule whenever you carry out other maintenance checks in your office or house.

Here are a few tips that you could take into consideration for your parking lot maintenance.

1) Hire the best Quality Asphalt Contractor

Experienced and knowledgeable contractors know how to make the best quality parking lots. An experienced contractor knows how to build a parking lot which will cost less to maintain and have lower repair costs over the years. Hiring the best of the best in the industry will ensure that the life of your parking lot goes upto 30 years.

2) Maintain Proper Drainage

Drainage allows the water to channel away from your parking lot, so that it does not pool up and stay and form puddles on the surface. Over time, standing water will allow moisture to seep into the asphalt, causing the surface to break down and cracks to form. Having a proper drainage helps you maintain your parking lot and prolongs its lifespan.

3) Repair Cracks

If there are visible cracks on your parking lot, get them repaired immediately. Surface cracks appear from time to time. But if these cracks are repaired and dealt with in time, they are not able to cause extensive damage to your parking lot. Hire a professional contractor who could repair and seal with an approved sealant. Remember, if you notice any cracks from water damage, don’t ignore it.

4) Avoid Water Seepage

Asphalt deteriorates if water is allowed to seep in through the surface. Water is one of the most destructive causes of asphalt deterioration, especially in areas where it snows and rains excessively. In such cases, it is important to prevent the water from filtering through the asphalt into the foundation and layers of the structure underneath. A trusted and top quality sealcoat with the help of a professional would be the best option.

5) Cleanliness

Seal coating should be performed about every 3 years, but it’s important not to forget about other regular maintenance. Rocks, leaves and dirt can decrease the appearance of your driveway, but there are many other reasons why you should regularly sweep your parking lot. For one, removing this debris will also help you create a safe parking lot for the pedestrians to use it. It also helps prevent standing water and drainage problems.

If you maintain your parking lot, you can prolong its life. Also, a well maintained and clean parking space has a certain aesthetic value to it. With the help of a professional road construction firm, keep your parking lot in the best of conditions.

Concrete Walkways

5 Reasons To Install A Walkway

A walkway can be a wonderful addition to your home. It improves curb appeal, increases your home’s value and is a fine way to walk across your home’s landscape.

Check out our set of reasons for recommending a walkway installation.

Convenience

When you install a walkway, be it stone or concrete, it makes the job of reaching your house or your exit easier. You don’t have to walk through the grass or walk on your driveway. You can make your walkway such that it is the shortest distance between your house and the exit. Even guests won’t have to use your driveway or walk through your grass in order to get there – they can enjoy the convenience a walkway provides.

Curb Appeal

If the exterior surroundings of your business or home do not look pleasing then visitors will not feel like visiting. It is that simple. With a driveway in place, your visitors will feel welcomed. Having a walkway gives them a sense of invitation and makes it easy for them to get to your front door or other destination, like your back yard, which ups the curb appeal of your property.

Improves Look of your Home

Moderately elevated walkways can give your landscape the dimension it needs. This will give the landscape more attention and improve the overall look of your home. As mentioned in the previous point, it will in turn make visitors feel welcomed.

Safety

If your home or business is in a region where it snows a lot then building a walkway is the best way to go. It will provide a safe pathway for your visitors as well as yourself during bad weather so that people don’t have to wade through the snow. Plus, it is easier to shovel a walkway than an entire driveway.

A few paver walkway ideas which you could ask your landscaping contractor about are:

  1. Straight path

A straight design gives the visitor a formal entry that leads them right to your front door.

  1. Curved path

The curved pathway gives an informal look to your front yard.

  1. Colored concrete

Concrete can be transformed to nearly any color imaginable with concrete staining and dying products.

  1. Stamped concrete

Stamping concrete will transform a standard slab of concrete to look like natural stone or pavers.

  1. Decorative borders

Adding a border to your concrete walkway can change the look drastically from an average slab to a one of a kind path.

  1. Exposed aggregate

When you install this type of walkway, it almost seems as though you’re walking on gravel when you’re making your way to the front door, however, it’s a textured, mixed and colored surface that doesn’t move beneath your feet.

So what are you waiting for? Contact a professional contractor today and start building your walkway today.

Paving For Better Roads In Schools

Canada has one of the highest literacy rates in the world with 97%. Our nation offers an excellent education quality to the residents with public schools being the primary form of education.

In 2014, the Government of Alberta decided to revamp and renovate Edmonton’s aging schools. A school’s education is only as good as the facilities and infrastructure it has.The Government of Alberta had set a massive 45 million dollar budget for a three year renovation plan of schools. One of the schools being renovated was Ross Sheppard High School.

The School Thunderbird Emblem

The school caters to the educational needs of over 2,000 students and one of its most notable alumni is Wayne Gretzky.

Blacktop Paving was subcontracted to assist the government in the renovation of the Ross Sheppard High School.

The Scope

Blacktop was hired to install a new parking lot, driving lanes, sidewalks, curbs and commercial crossings. Here are the challenges we faced:

  • Since we were part of a larger schedule, we had to thoroughly ensure that timelines were maintained

  • The school continued to run during the renovation project. This meant that we had to ensure that the students and staff still had easy access to the school and were able to park vehicles.

The Fix

Edmonton Paving

Coordinating closely with the contractors, the City of Edmonton and other subcontractors, we scheduled the work such that we strictly adhered to the project timeline. Constant communication was key to keep the work moving forward.

We put in extensive work hours to ensure that the paving was completed as soon as possible. We gave the Ross Sheppard school fresh pavement when the school opened by Monday.

The Continuation

The three year project will be completed at the end of 2016. We look forward to working the Government of Alberta and the City of Edmonton in bettering the infrastructure of our country.

Concrete Maintenance Tips

5 Ways To Protect Your Concrete Driveway

Nothing takes the shine off your home more than a cracked or stained driveway. A well-paved driveway is a vital addition for your home as it makes the drive towards your main door easier and also adds value to your property.

This is why concrete is the perfect material to build your driveway as it is long lasting as well as offers attractive options to choose from. Their maintenance cost is also relatively low. But, it’s important to maintain them regularly because the expenses associated with their repair can be expensive. You can avoid this issue by keeping a few steps concrete maintenance tips in mind:

1) Ensure Proper Curing

Proper curing during the installation of the driveway helps you avoid many problems at a later stage. Curing is the process by which appropriate moisture levels are maintained in the wet materials of the concrete. This aids the cohesion of the two surfaces of concrete and makes your driveway more enduring and of a superior quality.

Lack of this moisture can decrease your driveway’s lifespan and give it a flaky appearance. Contracting a professional paving expert ensures your concrete driveway is built correctly and lasts a long time.

2) Seal Regularly

Sealing your concrete periodically helps in restoring its shine and protects it against weather damage. It is also the easiest way to prevent cracks in it. Depending on the climatic conditions of your area and the traffic on your driveway, you should seal your driveway at the end of a year or two. A good way to determine if your driveway needs sealing for the first time is the presence of cracks or discoloration on the surface.

3) Avoid Deicing Chemicals

Avoid using deicing chemicals and salts on your concrete driveway. Deicing agents contain chemicals like ammonium nitrates and ammonium sulfates that react with the surface of your concrete leading to its discoloration and scaling. Salts like calcium chloride and sodium chloride though milder on the concrete can cause damage to the vegetation and metal surfaces around your driveway. Instead, use sand as an alternative for thawing your driveway during the winter months.

4) Prevent Cracks

Concrete driveways though resilient and durable, are not completely privy to the effects of weather and traffic. With changes in moisture and temperature, concrete tends to expand and shrink. This process of expansion and contraction leads to cracks on the surface of your driveway. Control joints help in adjusting these cracks and give a longer life to the concrete. Consult your contractor about installing them in your driveway.

5) Take Care

The best way to protect your concrete driveway is to take care of it. Don’t allow vehicles for three days after its installation or maintenance. For heavy vehicles like trucks and SUVs, make it a no-entry zone for about 7 days. Take care to prevent cracks or holes while plowing or shoveling in the area.

Keep these concrete maintenance tips in mind to ensure a longer life for your driveway. Scheduling a regular maintenance check with a good paving service also helps in keeping your driveway crack free. Visit our website to request a quote today.

Tips For Concrete Maintenance

With regular concrete pavement maintenance, a concrete driveway can last upto 20-30 years. But we as humans, tend to forget many things one of them probably being maintenance of your driveway?

If you wish to keep your concrete driveway in top notch condition, follow the below mentioned concrete pavement maintenance tips.

Clean On A Regular Basis

In order to maintain your concrete pavement, you need to clean it regularly. The frequency will really depend on how much the driveway gets used and how much road traffic and other pollutants you have in your area. A pressure washer is the best tool for the job. You can hire a professional pressure washing company to do the job and if your driveway has a lot of stains or other discoloration, this may be the best option since they’ll have special products for stain removal.

Get Rid Of Spills And Stains Rightaway

Clean up spills as soon as they occur. You can soak up excess oil with almost anything you have on hand that is absorbent including kitty litter, sawdust or cornmeal. Clean stains with soap and water or a commercial product intended specifically for concrete and masonry driveways. As mentioned in the previous point, you need to keep an eye out if you intend to maintain your driveway.

Regular Sealing

No matter how old your driveway may be, it’s never too late to seal and protect it from the elements. Sealing is the easiest way to protect the driveway from cracking. Once cracking sets in it’s hard to stop. To prevent this from happening, start preparing for winter in September. Power wash your driveway to remove sediments and oil if any before you apply the sealant. During winters, remember to shovel the snow. The goal is to keep water from seeping into the concrete, which later freezes and cracks the concrete.

Don’t Change Oil On Your Driveway

If you’re like a lot of people you may do at least some maintenance on your own vehicle but whenever you change the oil there’s a high risk that it may spill onto the driveway. If you have no other option, use a large drip pan available at an automotive store. They’re intended for just that purpose. Or just do the maintenance somewhere else which will save you the hassle of cleaning it later on.

Repair Cracks When You First See Them

Cracks in concrete and masonry occur naturally due to shifting and settlement of the ground beneath. Freezing and thawing of ice and snow can widen the cracks as can weeds and grass that take hold. Repair cracks while they are still small to help prevent further damage.

If the damage is extensive, you may have to repave the entire driveway all over again. To ensure you don’t have to, ensure you take care of your driveway.

You will need a professional contractor or a construction company which will be able to help you with your repair or concrete pavement maintenance needs.

Do You Need A Professional Sandblaster?

Sandblasting is a process that involves shooting a combination of sand and air at high pressure to freshen up or change the texture of a surface and blast away debris. If you are looking to refinish your floor or repaint your home, you may be wondering if you need a professional sandblaster. While there are some situations like removing oil spots from a surface that does not require a professional, projects like remodeling your home or cleaning a large surface area calls for a professional touch. The demands of the right kind of materials and equipment in most sandblasting jobs make it necessary to hire a professional sandblaster. Here are a few reasons why you should hire a professional sandblaster.

Knowledge And Experience

Sandblasting is great for a wide variety of projects, but every sandblasting job is different. Different surfaces call for different methods and varied amount of materials. This is why it makes sense to have a professional on the job. Professionals have a thorough knowledge of the type of materials and methods suited for a particular surface. A professional service provider works with you to identify and offer you the best sandblasting method for your project. Having a professional on the job ensures you achieve your desired results in the best manner.

Professional Surety

A licensed and insured contractor can assure you of a professional service. When you search for sandblasting services, you may find several contractors claiming to provide the best service possible at a very low rate. However, avoid getting fooled by such appealing quotes. Such contractors may not have a license and fail to provide appropriate service. A properly licensed and insured contractor is the best choice. This way, if something goes wrong, the liability insurance saves you the damages. If the professional you hire is using sub-contractors, then make sure the sub-contractors are also licensed and bonded.

High-End Quality Equipment

The job of sandblasting requires high-end, quality equipment, which is not cheap. Not using the right machines and the right technique may lead to more damage and costly repairs. Hence, it is best to hire a professional to get the job done. They have the best machines and tools to take care of the job at hand. They also have the knowledge and skill to handle these machines and are aware of the right techniques for a great finish on your surface.

All the above-mentioned reasons highlight the need for a professional sandblaster. A professional sandblaster’s knowledge and experience combined with the right technology ensures you achieve the best and lasting results.

Edmonton Snow And Ice Removal Tips For Your Driveway

Snow removal is no fun, but you can’t avoid it, especially when you live in a place that experiences heavy snowfall. Unshoveled snow not only causes inconvenience, but is also a hazard. While the task of snow and ice removal seems daunting, if done the right way, the job can go smoothly. Here are a few Edmonton snow and ice removal tips to make the task easier.

Plan Ahead

Planning ahead ensures a safe and efficient snow removal process. This becomes vital, especially during rough weather conditions. You cannot prevent a snowstorm, but you can try minimizing its effects. Checking the forecast each night before you get to bed helps you schedule your day, and avoid delays and frustration. Make sure you warm up your muscles before commencing the task to prevent injuries. Dressing is equally important. Dress in layers to keep yourself warm and put on slip-resistant boots for a better grip.

Pick The Right Shovel

An already tedious task, snow shoveling can be much harder if you don’t have the right shovel. It is best to choose a quality shovel with an appropriate blade size for best results. Also, bear in mind that large shovels aren’t always helpful. Hence, it is best to choose a shovel as per your strength and comfort.

Shovel Safe

Shoveling becomes quick and easy when done in the right way. Keep the following tips in mind for safe shoveling.

  • Bend your knees and lift your legs. Keep the shovel blade close to you as you lift the snow to prevent back strain.

  • Keep switching between shoveling right-handed and left-handed to avoid muscle fatigue.

  • If there is a foot or more of snow, avoid getting it all in one scoop. Try skimming a few inches before getting to the bottom.

  • It is best to shovel the path to your car first. This way you can start your car and turn on the defrosting mechanisms.

  • You must pay attention to where to pile the shoveled snow. Piling at the end of the driveway is not a great idea. This will result in doubling your work.

  • Do not rush. Vow to take breaks every few minutes and make sure you keep yourself hydrated.

  • Shovel often. Avoiding snow removal can lead to dangerous, icy driveway.

Invest In A Snow Blower

Snow blowers are worth considering, especially if you reside in a region with heavy snowfall. Snow blowers take away a lot of tedious aspects of snow removal. Removing huge piles of snow becomes quicker and easier with a snow blower. They are available in different types, so choose the pick the one that suits your needs.

Melt The Glossy Sheet Of Ice

The thawing cycle is an ongoing process during snowy winters. The snow melts and freezes, resulting in slippery drives that pose risks. Anti-icers are a type of chemical applied before snowfall begins, to prevent snow and ice from sticking to the pavement. De-icers are chemicals used to melt the ice after snow removal. Both come in different varieties, so you may select the one that fits your requirements.

While it is taxing, snow removal also seems burdensome in today’s hectic lifestyle. Moreover, shoveling might not always help during heavy snowfalls and storms. It is best to outsource the task to an Edmonton snow and ice removal service provider and ensure a relaxed and fun winter.
