Concrete Walkways

5 Reasons To Install A Walkway

A walkway can be a wonderful addition to your home. It improves curb appeal, increases your home’s value and is a fine way to walk across your home’s landscape.

Check out our set of reasons for recommending a walkway installation.

When you install a walkway, be it stone or concrete, it makes the job of reaching your house or your exit easier. You don’t have to walk through the grass or walk on your driveway. You can make your walkway such that it is the shortest distance between your house and the exit. Even guests won’t have to use your driveway or walk through your grass in order to get there – they can enjoy the convenience a walkway provides.

Curb Appeal

If the exterior surroundings of your business or home do not look pleasing then visitors will not feel like visiting. It is that simple. With a driveway in place, your visitors will feel welcomed. Having a walkway gives them a sense of invitation and makes it easy for them to get to your front door or other destination, like your back yard, which ups the curb appeal of your property.

Improves Look of your Home

Moderately elevated walkways can give your landscape the dimension it needs. This will give the landscape more attention and improve the overall look of your home. As mentioned in the previous point, it will in turn make visitors feel welcomed.

If your home or business is in a region where it snows a lot then building a walkway is the best way to go. It will provide a safe pathway for your visitors as well as yourself during bad weather so that people don’t have to wade through the snow. Plus, it is easier to shovel a walkway than an entire driveway.

A few paver walkway ideas which you could ask your landscaping contractor about are:

  1. Straight path

A straight design gives the visitor a formal entry that leads them right to your front door.

  1. Curved path

The curved pathway gives an informal look to your front yard.

  1. Colored concrete

Concrete can be transformed to nearly any color imaginable with concrete staining and dying products.

  1. Stamped concrete

Stamping concrete will transform a standard slab of concrete to look like natural stone or pavers.

  1. Decorative borders

Adding a border to your concrete walkway can change the look drastically from an average slab to a one of a kind path.

  1. Exposed aggregate

When you install this type of walkway, it almost seems as though you’re walking on gravel when you’re making your way to the front door, however, it’s a textured, mixed and colored surface that doesn’t move beneath your feet.

So what are you waiting for? Contact a professional contractor today and start building your walkway today.

Concrete Maintenance Tips

5 Ways To Protect Your Concrete Driveway

Nothing takes the shine off your home more than a cracked or stained driveway. A well-paved driveway is a vital addition for your home as it makes the drive towards your main door easier and also adds value to your property.

This is why concrete is the perfect material to build your driveway as it is long lasting as well as offers attractive options to choose from. Their maintenance cost is also relatively low. But, it’s important to maintain them regularly because the expenses associated with their repair can be expensive. You can avoid this issue by keeping a few steps concrete maintenance tips in mind:

1) Ensure Proper Curing

Proper curing during the installation of the driveway helps you avoid many problems at a later stage. Curing is the process by which appropriate moisture levels are maintained in the wet materials of the concrete. This aids the cohesion of the two surfaces of concrete and makes your driveway more enduring and of a superior quality.

Lack of this moisture can decrease your driveway’s lifespan and give it a flaky appearance. Contracting a professional paving expert ensures your concrete driveway is built correctly and lasts a long time.

2) Seal Regularly

Sealing your concrete periodically helps in restoring its shine and protects it against weather damage. It is also the easiest way to prevent cracks in it. Depending on the climatic conditions of your area and the traffic on your driveway, you should seal your driveway at the end of a year or two. A good way to determine if your driveway needs sealing for the first time is the presence of cracks or discoloration on the surface.

3) Avoid Deicing Chemicals

Avoid using deicing chemicals and salts on your concrete driveway. Deicing agents contain chemicals like ammonium nitrates and ammonium sulfates that react with the surface of your concrete leading to its discoloration and scaling. Salts like calcium chloride and sodium chloride though milder on the concrete can cause damage to the vegetation and metal surfaces around your driveway. Instead, use sand as an alternative for thawing your driveway during the winter months.

4) Prevent Cracks

Concrete driveways though resilient and durable, are not completely privy to the effects of weather and traffic. With changes in moisture and temperature, concrete tends to expand and shrink. This process of expansion and contraction leads to cracks on the surface of your driveway. Control joints help in adjusting these cracks and give a longer life to the concrete. Consult your contractor about installing them in your driveway.

5) Take Care

The best way to protect your concrete driveway is to take care of it. Don’t allow vehicles for three days after its installation or maintenance. For heavy vehicles like trucks and SUVs, make it a no-entry zone for about 7 days. Take care to prevent cracks or holes while plowing or shoveling in the area.

Keep these concrete maintenance tips in mind to ensure a longer life for your driveway. Scheduling a regular maintenance check with a good paving service also helps in keeping your driveway crack free. Visit our website to request a quote today.

Tips For Concrete Maintenance

With regular concrete pavement maintenance, a concrete driveway can last upto 20-30 years. But we as humans, tend to forget many things one of them probably being maintenance of your driveway?

If you wish to keep your concrete driveway in top notch condition, follow the below mentioned concrete pavement maintenance tips.

Clean On A Regular Basis

In order to maintain your concrete pavement, you need to clean it regularly. The frequency will really depend on how much the driveway gets used and how much road traffic and other pollutants you have in your area. A pressure washer is the best tool for the job. You can hire a professional pressure washing company to do the job and if your driveway has a lot of stains or other discoloration, this may be the best option since they’ll have special products for stain removal.

Get Rid Of Spills And Stains Rightaway

Clean up spills as soon as they occur. You can soak up excess oil with almost anything you have on hand that is absorbent including kitty litter, sawdust or cornmeal. Clean stains with soap and water or a commercial product intended specifically for concrete and masonry driveways. As mentioned in the previous point, you need to keep an eye out if you intend to maintain your driveway.

Regular Sealing

No matter how old your driveway may be, it’s never too late to seal and protect it from the elements. Sealing is the easiest way to protect the driveway from cracking. Once cracking sets in it’s hard to stop. To prevent this from happening, start preparing for winter in September. Power wash your driveway to remove sediments and oil if any before you apply the sealant. During winters, remember to shovel the snow. The goal is to keep water from seeping into the concrete, which later freezes and cracks the concrete.

Don’t Change Oil On Your Driveway

If you’re like a lot of people you may do at least some maintenance on your own vehicle but whenever you change the oil there’s a high risk that it may spill onto the driveway. If you have no other option, use a large drip pan available at an automotive store. They’re intended for just that purpose. Or just do the maintenance somewhere else which will save you the hassle of cleaning it later on.

Repair Cracks When You First See Them

Cracks in concrete and masonry occur naturally due to shifting and settlement of the ground beneath. Freezing and thawing of ice and snow can widen the cracks as can weeds and grass that take hold. Repair cracks while they are still small to help prevent further damage.

If the damage is extensive, you may have to repave the entire driveway all over again. To ensure you don’t have to, ensure you take care of your driveway.

You will need a professional contractor or a construction company which will be able to help you with your repair or concrete pavement maintenance needs.

It is crucial to protect it from harsh weather conditions and repair any cracks or potholes on its surface. Pavement maintenance not only ensures your vehicles’ safety but also helps you save money in the long run. Here are a few key signs that indicate your pavement needs an inspection from concrete driveway repair contractors:

1) Cracks

Cracks are a common warning sign that your pavement needs repairs. There are various types of cracks that can appear on your concrete driveway. Some are small (measure below half an inch) and easy to repair while others are deep and need immediate attention from a skilled pavement contractor. Here are a few common types of cracks that might appear on your concrete driveway:

  • Longitudinal cracks: These cracks run parallel to the pavement. The reasons for them to originate are poorly constructed pavement joints, simple driveway fatigue etc.

  • Transverse cracks: These fissures are perpendicular to the centerline of the pavement caused due to exposure to extremely low temperatures and hardening of the binder.

  • Alligator cracks: These cracks resemble the scales of an alligator. They can lead to potholes if not treated timely. Caused due to inadequate structural support, moisture damage and stripping at of the base layer.

  • Edge Cracks: These kinds of cracks run along the inside edge of the pavement. Most commonly caused due to a lack of support at the edges and poor drainage conditions.

  • Slippage Cracks: These cracks are found at the surface layer of the driveway and are crescent-shaped. They are caused due to the weakening of the connection between the underlying layer and the top surface.

If you notice any of these cracks on the surface of your pavement, contact one of the reliable concrete driveway repair contractors in Edmonton such as Blacktop Paving.

2) Drainage Issues

The build-up of moisture caused by poor drainage can be detrimental for the strength of your pavement. It can affect the binding of the layers underneath. If you spot puddles on your driveway, then consult a contractor about the issue. Timely repair of drainage issues can save your driveway from potholes, cracks and other damages.

3) Undermining

Undermining occurs when an underground pipe cracks or slips from its joint. When this happens, the newly formed crack allows soil to enter the pipe until the concrete surface above is eroded. A contractor can solve this problem by replacing the damaged base and repaving the depleted concrete.

4) Distortion

Pavement distortion is a type of surface distress caused by the instability of the concrete mix or weakening of the base and the subgrade layers of your pavement. Patching is advised for minor depressions, while complete replacement might be necessary for severe depressions.

5) Sinkage

A concrete pavement sits on a compact base. If this base begins to decline, you may notice sinkage. Sinkage often happens when the downpipe is depositing water too close to the structure, damaging the concrete pavement below. You may need to contact a plumbing expert along with a pavement contractor to fix this issue completely.

Making Roads For Our Oil

Alberta accounts for almost 79% of Canada’s oil production. However, the oil boom of the 80s has grown sluggish due to low oil production output and the oil price crash. NWR Sturgeon Refinery is trying to change all of that. The Sturgeon Refinery is the first refinery to be built in the last 30 years, and it’s only just completed its first phase of construction.

Blacktop Paving Inc. was more than glad to play a small, yet critical part of this journey.

NWR Sturgeon Refinery

With the oil industry is on a downturn in Alberta, NWR Sturgeon Refinery has infused new life into the industry. The Refinery is set for three phases and each phase will employ over 8,000 Albertans. The purpose of  the Sturgeon Refinery is to convert bitumen, which is low crude oil, into high-quality synthetic crude oil. Sturgeon Refinery is all set to process as much as 79,000 barrels per day.

Our Job

We were tasked with a crucial task of hardscaping the Central Administrative Building and the Firehall Warehouse with asphalt and concrete. The project required 14,500m2 of asphalt parking lot, 2100 lineal meters of curb and 2200m2 of concrete sidewalk and pads.

Time was a critical factor since both the Central Administrative Building and the Firehall Warehouse were essential for NWR Sturgeon Refinery to operate.

During any project, safety is always a priority to ensure that no one is injured due to the operation of heavy equipment. However, since NWR Sturgeon Refinery is deemed as a high risk industrial site, it demanded extreme and stringent safety expectations that even we weren’t adapted to.

The number of safety requirements threatened to interfere with our timeline. However, through good teamwork and coordination from site managers and employees, everyone fully embraced the stringent safety plan and stuck to it. Additional resources were assigned to this project to ensure sufficient equipment and materials were on site. A full-time HSE officer was assigned to the site and this allowed everyone to operate without getting bogged down in safety red-tape.

Even though the constant routine of the heightened safety procedure was new and tiring, the Blacktop Paving team quickly got used to it. The project was completed on time with no injury and without compromising on our high-quality work.

Concrete Maintenance Tips

5 Ways to Protect your Concrete Driveway through the Summer

Although concrete is a long-lasting and durable pavement material, it starts eroding with time and heavy usage. When your concrete driveway gets damaged, it results in cracks and potholes. Hence, to make sure it remains operational throughout the summer, you need to take proper measures and maintain your driveway efficiently.

A key advantage of having a concrete driveway is that it requires very little regular maintenance and repairs to maintain its smooth appearance. However, timely maintenance of a concrete pavement is crucial. Taking care of your driveway can also extend its lifespan and enhance its beauty. A well-kept pavement also adds value to your property. Here are a few concrete maintenance tips to get you started:

The best way to maintain your driveway is by hiring a professional contractor to do so. Hiring a skilled contractor ensures that your driveway is repaired and maintained correctly. A pavement expert not only cleans your driveway properly but also examines the cracks in your pavement and repairs them early-on to avoid unnecessary damage at a later stage. Our experts at Blacktop take the necessary driveway maintenance measures to create a high-quality concrete slab for both residential as well commercial purposes. Contact our paving experts to schedule a maintenance check today.

  • Keep the Driveway Clean

Before summer hits, make sure you take part in some spring cleaning. If you plan to clean your driveway manually, see to it that the concrete is dry before you start washing, Use a broom to clear away the dust, leaves, sticks and so forth. The best way to ensure efficient cleaning of your driveway is by calling a professional concrete cleaner to power wash your driveway. Power washing is a thorough and deep cleaning of a pavement surface that cannot be done by a single broom. Consult our professionals to know more.

  • Seal it on Time

Sealing your driveway is a good way to protect it from the summer heat. It is highly recommended reseal your driveway in summers after every two years. This is because, during this season, the concrete is exposed to intense heat and radiation from the sun resulting in cracking and fissuring of the surface. Sealers help to preserve the concrete from wearing out as well as protect the surface of the pavement. If your driveway is excessively damaged, get it repaired by an expert before sealing it.

  • Take Care of the Cracks

Cracks in your driveway can occur due to natural settling or shifting of the ground. If they are left unrepaired, it can lead to their expansion or in the emergence of potholes. This, in turn, allows weeds to take root and results in permanent damage to your pavement. Use concrete patching products to seal these cracks or consult a pavement expert to get them repaired permanently.

  • Keep Sharp Objects Away

Metal-edged shovels or metal ice chippers damage the surface of your driveway. So, it is best to keep them away from your pavement. Replace these chippers with plastic ice shovels as they won’t nick the surface of your driveway and are also a better option for clearing snow. If you have a snow blower, then raise its blades high while cleaning in order to avoid scraping of your driveway surface.

Keep these concrete maintenance tips in mind to ensure the safety of your pavement through the summer. If your driveway is really damaged, it is recommended to book a complete re-pavement to protect it from the cold season. You can consult our experts or request a quote online for the same.

Repaving Your Concrete Driveway: Things You Need To Know

Damage-free driveways are essential to ensure the drive towards your home is safe and easy. A beautifully paved driveway also increases the value of your property and adds aesthetic appeal to your front yard. Therefore, it is important to ensure your pavement is free of any cracks or potholes.

If you notice cracks, alligator scales or potholes on your driveway, resurface it with a concrete overlay. Re-paving your driveway not only covers up the existing flaws but also upgrades the look of your pavement. Repairing and resurfacing your concrete driveway also extends its lifespan and helps you save on repairs in the long run. To maintain a smooth concrete pavement, it’s recommended to repave your driveway at least once a year.

Here are a few things you should know about concrete driveway restoration:

Defining re-pavement

Repavement is the only solution for driveways that have been deteriorated badly due to poor maintenance and heavy usage. A concrete driveway’s overlay consists of a compact, one and a half inch layer of a hot mix of concrete. During the process of re-pavement, this overlay is placed over the existing base which in turn gives your concrete surface a new and complete look. Once the new overlay is placed correctly over the old surface, a sealant is applied to it regularly at the end of every month up to a year.  It is important to make sure this process of re-pavement is done carefully by a skilled contractor. Book an appointment with our pavement experts to know more about the same.

Process of re-pavement

Concrete re-pavement is a process in which your driveway’s concrete surface is cleaned, repaired and overlaid with a new surface. Here is a closer look at the process of concrete driveway restoration:

  • Cleaning – The existing i.e. the old surface of your concrete driveway is washed with a powdered washer in order to get rid of dirt and grease.

  • Filling – If there are any cracks on your driveway, then they are primed and reinforced with a fabric and covered with a polymer concrete.

  • Sealing or coloring – Once the filling is complete, the decorative coloring is applied. If you opt for it, a sealant would also be applied to secure the color of the concrete and to protect your driveway from natural elements.

  • Curing – This is a crucial step to ensure your driveway is smooth and damage-free. Do not use the pavement for the next 2-3 days. This will help the driveway to cure faster.

To make sure the process of re-pavement is conducted smoothly and efficiently, hire an experienced contractor who offers high-quality paving service.

Signs that you Need re-pavement

No matter how well you maintain them, driveways aren’t meant to last forever. Due to excessive use, your driveway will show certain signs and symptoms of wearing out. These are a few key signs that indicate your driveway needs re-pavement:

  • Multiple cracks and holes – Cracks are the most visible signs that your driveway needs repairs. Re-pavement ensures that these cracks and holes are filled correctly and are not spreading any further. Ignoring these cracks can lead to the complete breakdown of your pavement.

  • Extended lifespan- Driveways, if taken care of properly, usually last for a term of thirty years. If your driveway is approaching the end of its lifespan or has already crossed it, then book a re-pavement as soon as you can.

Keep these signs that your driveway needs re-pavement in mind to ensure the drive to your home or office is smooth and safe. Consult our pavement experts for more information or request a quote at our website to estimate an accurate budget of re-pavement.

What Causes Driveway Crack

4 Reasons For Cracks To Develop On Your Driveway

Driveways are an important aspect of your property. They not only enhance the aesthetic appeal of your residential or commercial space but also make the drive towards your home safe and easy. They also add value to your property. Hence, it is important to make sure your pathway is well-maintained and free of any cracks or holes.

However, over time, every driveway develops cracks, weeds may pop up on its surface and anthill mounds may spill out of its crevices. These fissures may seem small but when ignored can cause serious accidents. If you notice that your driveway is covered in cracks or littered with potholes, call a professional contractor before the cracks widen. Here’s a closer look at what causes driveway cracks to help you identify the signs of damage in your pavement better:

1) Improper Pavement

Most untrained contractors do not pack the crushed stone base for your driveway as tightly as they should. Unreliable paving companies also cut costs by skimping on the quality of materials like sand or dirt substrates used for your driveway. This reduces the durability of your pavement making it more prone to cracking and fracturing. Consulting experienced contractors like Blacktop ensures that your driveway is paved with the highest quality of materials with skilled craftsmanship. Contact our team of experts to know more about the same.

2) Snow Build-up

Irrespective of the material of your driveway, deposition of snow is always a bad idea. Snow, if not removed timely, melts and seeps into the surface of your driveway. When the temperature drops again, this water refreezes and leads to the emergence of cracks in your pavement. To avoid this, make sure you remove snow from your pathways on a regular basis. Failure to do so can lead to serious problems like slips and accidents. You can also contact a professional service like Blacktop for prompt snow removal that ensures the safety of your driveway.

3) Excessive Weight

Even though concrete and asphalt are strong pavement materials, lack of proper maintenance and excess usage can make them crack. When pressure is applied from below the surface, cracks can appear on your driveway. On the other hand, when excess pressure is exerted on the surface, your pavement can fracture.

Hence, it is important to be aware of the maximum amount of traffic your driveway can easily handle without developing fissures or potholes. The exact amount of weight that your pavement can support depends on the type of material used. Consult a skilled contractor to evaluate the amount of weight that should be permissible to be driven on your pavement.

4) Growth of Vegetation

Growing tree roots can cause tremendous damage to your driveway. As the roots of these plants, weeds and grasses expand, they press against the sub-surface base of your pavement. The pressure exerted by these roots can only be relieved by cracking the surface of your driveway leading to the emergence of potholes and fissures on the pavement.

Regularly weed out the growth of any vegetation on your driveway. You can also opt for thicker pavement options that help in resisting the growth of any plantings avoiding the emergence of cracks. You can also install tree-root barriers along both the sides of your driveway

Here were some of the most common answers to the query, what causes driveway cracks. If you notice any fissures or holes in your pavement, immediately contact an experienced contractor to get them fixed correctly.
