Edmonton Acreage Driveway

How Do We Build An Edmonton Acreage Driveway?

Driveways are an essential part of your home exterior. An attractive driveway adds value to the exteriors of your house. But driveways are prone to wear and tear due to traffic load and weather conditions. So, if you wish to install an Edmonton Acreage Driveway, you want to make sure that it lasts long. With asphalt paving you can ensure it lasts for as long as 15 years. Being a durable and low-maintenance material, asphalt is the best choice for your driveway. The skill and equipment involved in the process calls for a professional asphalt paving service. But understanding the process will expose you to the benefits of an asphalt driveway. The steps involved in building an Edmonton Acreage Driveway include:

Clearing the Unusable Foundation

Paving over an existing driveway, especially if it is damaged, is not a great idea. It can lead your new driveway to crack easily. Before preparing the base, we first evaluate the driveway area and remove the old surface. This includes digging out loose gravel and any other soft material like clay. Grading is the next step, which is necessary to let the water run to the sides in order to prevent a collapsed driveway. With the help of a drum roller, the soil is then compacted.

Layering Crushed Rock

A properly installed base provides a strong foundation for the overall structure. After clearing the base of damaging materials, we add a layer of crushed rock. We use a base of crushed rock that compacts well to allow proper drainage. The base is then settled with a roller and allowed a week’s time to settle.

Laying the Asphalt

Once the base is prepared, we determine the size and thickness of the asphalt. Generally, the best thickness level is 2 to 3 inches. This depends on the surface and the weather conditions of the area. With the help of state of the art equipment a fresh batch of hot asphalt mix is layered.

Compact the Asphalt

Compacting the asphalt layer is a vital step. The asphalt will easily weaken without proper finishing. We see to it that it is done in the right weather conditions allowing it to compact neatly. Usually, a sunny weather is the best time to carry out the process. With the use of a drum roller, we compact the layer, after which the edges are hand tempered at 45 degree angle to provide the necessary strength to the pavement.

You get a rich and attractive looking Edmonton Acreage Driveway after completion of the above steps. An asphalt driveway that is well cared for can last even more than 15 years. Hence, we recommend maintenance services like seal-coating and crack sealing to be done at regular intervals. Blacktop Paving Inc specializes in acreage asphalt paving services to provide you with quality and durable asphalt driveway.

Paving For Better Roads In Schools

Canada has one of the highest literacy rates in the world with 97%. Our nation offers an excellent education quality to the residents with public schools being the primary form of education.

In 2014, the Government of Alberta decided to revamp and renovate Edmonton’s aging schools. A school’s education is only as good as the facilities and infrastructure it has.The Government of Alberta had set a massive 45 million dollar budget for a three year renovation plan of schools. One of the schools being renovated was Ross Sheppard High School.

The School Thunderbird Emblem

The school caters to the educational needs of over 2,000 students and one of its most notable alumni is Wayne Gretzky.

Blacktop Paving was subcontracted to assist the government in the renovation of the Ross Sheppard High School.

The Scope

Blacktop was hired to install a new parking lot, driving lanes, sidewalks, curbs and commercial crossings. Here are the challenges we faced:

  • Since we were part of a larger schedule, we had to thoroughly ensure that timelines were maintained

  • The school continued to run during the renovation project. This meant that we had to ensure that the students and staff still had easy access to the school and were able to park vehicles.

The Fix

Edmonton Paving

Coordinating closely with the contractors, the City of Edmonton and other subcontractors, we scheduled the work such that we strictly adhered to the project timeline. Constant communication was key to keep the work moving forward.

We put in extensive work hours to ensure that the paving was completed as soon as possible. We gave the Ross Sheppard school fresh pavement when the school opened by Monday.

The Continuation

The three year project will be completed at the end of 2016. We look forward to working the Government of Alberta and the City of Edmonton in bettering the infrastructure of our country.

Driveway Maintenance Tips

A Complete Summer Maintenance Checklist For Your Driveway

Taking care of the driveway is an important aspect of your property maintenance. This is because your driveway is one of the most frequently utilized part of your acreage. It is the entrance road to your house and the area where you park your car.

However, due to its heavy usage, it can also get damaged easily, especially if there is a lack of regular maintenance and repair. At times, the cracks and potholes that develop over time in your driveway can also lead to serious accidents. Hence, it is important to repair these concrete and asphalt cracks as soon as they appear to prevent them from growing any wider. Regular maintenance is even more significant during summer because the hot weather can worsen the surface of your pavement and cause additional problems.

To protect your pavement through the hottest days of the year here are a few driveway maintenance tips:

Maintaining a concrete driveway

A concrete driveway doesn’t require much repair if maintained regularly. Hence, preserve its life and appearance by following these tips:

  • Apply a sealer – Cleaning and sealing the driveway with a professional sealant protects it against damage and makes it clean and shiny. It is recommended to seal your driveway at least twice a year.

  • Remove the stains – If you spot any stains on your concrete driveway, remove them using soap and lukewarm water immediately to avoid further blemishes.

  • Avoid decaying chemicals – Decaying chemicals damage your driveway and give it a scaly appearance. Avoid using chemicals containing ammonium nitrate to prevent such problems. If you spot any scaling on your concrete driveway, immediately consult a professional contractor to get it fixed.

Maintaining an Asphalt Driveway

Asphalt driveways usually last for a decade, if taken care of properly. To avoid any heat damage to your asphalt driveway, follow these easy tips:

  • Seal your driveway – A professional sealant protects your driveway from the elements and stops cracks from coming in. Sealing also protects your asphalt driveway against damage from strong winds.

  • Repair the cracks – The older your driveway is, the more cracks it develops. The presence of cracks on your asphalt pavement can lead to the growth of weed in between these spaces. Hence, to avoid this problem, contact our paving experts to fix it immediately.

  • Get rid of standing water – Standing water is a major reason why your driveway cracks. Clean the driveway thoroughly and make sure there is no water collected on its surface.

Keep these driveway maintenance tips in mind to make sure your pavement is well protected throughout the season. If you spot cracks or scales on your driveway, contact our experts to get them fixed. You can also request a quote on our website to estimate your budget accurately.

Hence, it is used while decking with other paving materials. To maintain a brick pavement, you need to watch out for mold and get rid of it as early as possible. If there are areas which are displaced, then rectify it with sand.

2) Asphalt

Apart from being an excellent paving material for driveways, asphalt is also a popular landscape paving option. It is a made with a by-product of crushed rock and petroleum known as bitumen. Asphalt is relatively easy to install and comes with hassle-free maintenance. You just need to ensure that you clean it regularly and get it resealed once every 3-4 years. The only downside to using an asphalt pavement is that it tends to get damaged at extremely high temperatures.

3) Concrete

Asphalt Driveway Repair

How Do You Prevent Asphalt Damage?

Asphalt is one of the toughest materials to use in construction of your driveway. But even the toughest can be broken when subjected to natural forces. If you have observed rocks on the riverside, you will see that they have been withered away due to the water splashing across them constantly.

How do you prevent asphalt from cracking? Here are a few ideas to help you prevent your asphalt from getting damaged.

Prevent Water Damage

To prevent your asphalt from cracking, the best thing to do is to prevent water intrusion through or under the pavement as much as possible. Water is susceptible to freezing and thawing, which prematurely damages the pavement. Try to get good drainage away from the driveway as well. Your paving contractor can help with this as they are going through the paving process. Do not let water collect on your driveway.

Clear the Way

As mentioned above, to keep your pavement intact, it is important to move rain or flood water off the surface and into the drains as fast as possible. To accomplish this, remove debris from pavement and clear out blocked drains. It is also crucial to check and correct pavement slopes and flow lines to ensure asphalt driveway safety.

Level the Field

No, not the playing field but your driveway. You want your pavement and the people who walk on it to be safe. Your parking lot should be free of dips, depressions, and potholes that not only allow further water damage, but could also cause someone to trip and fall. Different types of solutions are available. It will depend on the root cause of the damage and also the type of environment you reside in. You will need the help of a professional contractor in this case.

Fixes? Maybe

If there are cracks in the pavement, seal them as needed. Sealcoating periodically will help keep the elements from oxidizing the surface. However, do not over-seal, as that will reduce the life of the pavement. Sealcoat only when the previous sealcoat is worn off by traffic to a point where significant portions of the bare pavement below the sealcoat are showing.

If There is a Lot of Damage

If your pavement still looks worn out, it may be time to think about replacing the asphalt. A lot of times, there are problems with the structure or there are problems with the foundation. Depending on the cause, you may have to replace the asphalt if it stops functioning mechanically, meaning it does not drain properly, is bumpy, or there is too much settling.

Contact a professional who will be able to repair your driveway if you have potholes or cracks developing. Avoid DIYing your asphalt driveway repair because it will be troublesome and apart from that, you may commit some mistake which might cost you your time and money.

Paving For The LRT

Edmonton Light Rail Transport (LRT) started in 1981 and today has 18 stations. If you are a resident in Edmonton, you know what a blessing LRT can be. It’s an efficient way to move from one part of the city to another, completely avoiding the terrible traffic on the roads during peak hours.

If you have visited the stations of MacEwan Station Plaza, the Kingsway Station Plaza and the NAIT Station Plaza, then you’ve been walking on the finest paving handiwork! We constructed the concrete sidewalks and plazas in these stations.

The Project

Blacktop Paving was a subcontractor of the North Link Partnership, a joint venture between Graham Construction and SNC for LRT. We were asked to pave concrete plazas and sidewalks for the MacEwan Station, the Kingsway Station and the NAIT Station.

The Challenge

For any public project, deadlines are a challenge as they are already set and not easily changed. It was similar to this project. However, the timeline was not our biggest challenge. The biggest challenge was the amount of work and the sheer volume of concrete required.

At the end of the project, we poured over 2200 cubic meters of concrete. We also had to give specific finishes to the concrete pavement.

In addition to that, for such a massive project, coordination was a linchpin to ensure the success of the project.

The Execution

Some of the concrete finishes were new to us and while the saw cuts were numerous, they had to be highly accurate and precise. Since the concrete finishes were new to us, we created samples and worked with the project architects to ensure that we delivered as expected. This greatly reduced any chance of errors and prevented any possible wastage of time and costs.

We also worked closely with the contractor’s management team to ensure milestones were met and the overall project schedule was maintained.

We have given back to the city in a way no other project of ours has. Hundreds of people use the plaza at these stations and we’re glad to say that we delivered quality work that will last for decades to come. This was a very challenging project and through hard work and effective teamwork, we were able to deliver the quality we’re well known for.

If you’re at MacEwan, Kingsway or NAIT Station, you’re walking on the best quality pavement!

Driveway Repair

5 Elements That Are Damaging Your Driveway

A damaged driveway can affect your property value and building a new one does not necessarily solve that problem – if it gets damaged again. Why does your driveway keep getting damaged? Chances are that poor quality materials were used to construct it. Is your driveway covered with potholes? Or you can see hefty divots all around? If yes then you definitely need a driveway repair.

There are certain elements that may be damaging your driveway, forcing your to repair your driveway or reconstruct it completely.

1. Heavy Vehicles

Parking of heavy vehicles such as trucks and trolleys at the same place for a long time leads to compacting of the asphalt. The deterioration is more visible in areas where heavy vehicles either slow down or stop. Cracks and depressions are not only a sign of weakness, but also leads to various other problems such as puddling of water which further deteriorate the asphalt.

2. Tree Roots

Tree roots are a major area of concern while building an asphalt road. Tree roots are always in search of water and nutrients which are necessary for its growth. They often extend upto 50 feet from the trunk due to which they lift and crack the pavement.

Additionally, having trees around a driveway adds aesthetic value and you do not want to cut the tree. However, the tree roots could damage your driveway. This is why hiring an experienced contractor who takes such things into account will be able to help.

3.  Sunlight

Sunlight is one of the major causes of asphalt deterioration. A new driveway is jet black but after prolonged usage it turns grey, which indicates that it has undergone oxidation. UV rays act as catalysts as they speed up the oxidation process, thus weakening the binding which holds all the aggregates such as rock and sand – leading to asphalt deterioration.

4. Fuel and Oil

Oil and other types of vehicular fluids are a major cause of asphalt deterioration. They penetrate the surface and cause extensive softening, which leads to cracking and formation of crevices in the affected region. The longer you leave asphalt exposed to oil and other fuels, the higher the driveway repair cost will be.

5. Snow and Water

Standing water is a major cause of asphalt damage. Puddling of water softens the aggregates of the asphalt which results in its premature aging. On the other hand, snow can also not be neglected. A huge amount of snow can create pressure which leads to cracks, crevices and hefty divots thereby further deteriorating the asphalt. If snow and water is not taken care of, it often leads to potholes.

Keep an eye out for these elements affecting your driveway. Hiring an experienced paving contractor, such as Blacktop Paving, who provide both commercial as well as residential services such as asphalt paving, sandblasting and snow removal can be of great help.

Ribbon Driveway Pavers

Do You Want A Ribbon Driveway

What exactly is a ribbon driveway? No it’s not a driveway made of ribbons if that’s where your thinking is taking you.

Ribbon or “Hollywood” driveways became popular in the 1920s and consist of two parallel strips of concrete, mortar-set stone or brick, or solid or turf pavers with an open, unpaved space in between. The strips in a ribbon driveway should be at least two feet wide and located so they are separated five feet in the center.

Following are a few reasons why you could want to construct a ribbon driveway:

More Attractive

Ribbon driveways offer more attractive elements than your standard driveway with a strip of greenery to add some life and color to your home. They enhance the appearance of the house, especially the front.

Environment Friendly

One of the reasons why it is environment friendly is because ribbon driveway uses less concrete. Coupled with less concrete usage, you use a lot of greenery to construct the driveway.

Easy on the Pocket

As constructing a ribbon driveway requires less material, it eventually becomes less costly. In addition to requiring less material and money, it can also be completed in a short span of time.

Conserve Water

Ribbon driveway is a really good way to aid water conservation. By saying that it helps in conserving water, it makes the water flow into the surrounding flora and fauna which does two things. First, it keeps the driveway safe from damage of standing water and second, the water which runs into the surrounding soil helps the plants. So again, you could say these driveways are environment friendly.

Ribbon driveways can be gravelled, pebbled, grassed over or planted up with low growing ground cover flowers. Ground hugging thymes and chamomile spring to mind and as they are quite tough, they won’t mind being trodden on and the wonderful scent is released as the leaves are crushed.

Ribbon driveways are able to respond more dynamically to frost and thaw cycles than fully paved driveways and are less prone to cracking. If needed, replacement of ribbon driveways is easier, quicker, and less costly.

Nowadays, this design is making a comeback due to its environmental benefits and nostalgic appeal. Hire the services of a professional road construction company which will help you with the construction of a ribbon driveway.

Tips To Maintain Your Newly Paved Office Driveway

Your commercial driveway is the path that makes the drive to your office or its parking lot safe and easy. It is also one of the very first things people notice about your commercial space. Hence, it is crucial to maintain your office driveway properly.

Even if your driveway is newly paved, it may still break down due to improper use. This is because similar to any other aspect of your commercial property, your driveway also requires regular upkeep to ensure that it is safe and free of any cracks or potholes. The better the care and maintenance you give your driveway, the longer it lasts. It is highly recommended to conduct a routine check for your pavement at the end of each season.

Here are a few new driveway care and maintenance tips to keep your office pavement flawless:

1) Prevent Oil and Gasoline Spills

Although an oil or gasoline spill is never a good event for your pavement, it is especially harmful for an asphalt driveway. This is because asphalt is an oil-based material and a gasoline or oil spill may dissolve the surface of your driveway and lead to its discoloration and fading. Hence, it is important to avoid any such spills on your commercial driveway. If by any chance the accident does happen, immediately call a professional contractor to get it cleaned and repaired efficiently.

2) Fill in the Cracks

Cracks may develop on your driveway due to the movement of its base or its subsoil level during the freezing months. These movements usually result from the seepage of water under the driveway due to snow formation. Once the water seeps in your pavement, it remains stagnant there for a longer period of time giving rise to cracks. If you notice the appearance of cracks or holes in your pavement, call a professional to inspect your driveway and measure the depth of these cracks to fill them appropriately.

3) Remove the Snow

Snow removal should be prompt, thorough and timely. Failure to do this can lead to serious damages like cracks and potholes on your driveway. This is because, if the snow is not cleaned on time, it melts and the cold water then percolated into the base of your driveway, giving rise to cracks. Get the snow shoveled by a professional regularly during the winter months to avoid the formation of cracks and potholes in your driveway.

4) Seal it Timely

Using a quality seal coat will not only increase the life of your driveway but also enhance its appearance. The seal also makes sure that your driveway is locked with the materials properly keeping the dust particles and cracks at bay. It is recommended to seal coat your pavement every 3 years to keep your newly paved driveway well maintained.

Keep these new driveway care and maintenance tips in mind to make sure the drive to your office is easy and comfortable. If you notice any discoloration or cracks, consult our paving experts to repair and maintain your commercial property today.
