Pavement Companies in Edmonton

Which Driveway Is The Best?

While building a new driveway, a common doubt that most homeowners have in their minds is the best driveway material or type. When you talk to driveway and pavement companies in Edmonton, you will find that there are abundant choices available. Gravel, concrete, or asphalt – which will be the right fit? In this article, we will help to clear your doubt and help you decide the best driveway for you.

Here are some most commonly used driveway types that you can consider for your property.

Gravel

If you want to add a rustic or retro look to your property, loose gravel can be the best option for you. Gravel driveways are made of tiny stones, also known as gravel or pebbles, and are lined by a boundary to keep the gravel contained. Although gravel driveways are easy to install and even maintain, they aren’t suitable for areas with a slope or the ones that receive heavy snowfall.

Concrete

Concrete is considered to be one of the best driveways as concrete can be stamped, or patterned in countless styles. From classic old-school designs to urban styles, concrete can be used to create some amazing driveways. And the best part is that concrete driveways are long-lasting without much maintenance. The only drawback of concrete is that it stains quickly. So if you don’t have a garage and you plan to park your car on the driveway, the oil spills and dirty tires can stain the area.

Asphalt

Asphalt is yet another outstanding driveway option with a long list of benefits. It is long-lasting, weather and temperature-resistant, affordable and low on maintenance. Due to asphalt, your driveway will appear black in color, but you can customize the appearance too and make it stylish according to your home’s theme. Asphalt driveways can be customized by using hued asphalt aggregate or by applying a modified coating. In case you are looking for good drainage, you should avoid asphalt as it is not porous. Having a sloping driveway can be the solution for this problem.

Clay Brick

Clay brick pavers are rich in color and texture and can be laid in different color combinations and patterns. These pavers come in a variety of shapes and colors and can be set into a sand or mortar base on the driveway. Although they are an environment-friendly option, clay bricks can crack, break, or chip over the years. Thus, you may need to repair them often or replace the damaged blocks.

Gravel, concrete, or asphalt? It depends on the aesthetics you are expecting and your daily utility. You can talk to professionals at driveway and pavement companies in Edmonton if you are unable to make the right choice. After thoroughly assessing your property and understanding your needs and expectations, they will suggest the best driveway for your home.

Paving Companies in Edmonton

What Are The Different Types Of Driveways?

There are various types of driveways, and each type gives a different aesthetic appeal to your house. Apart from ensuring that driveways are smooth and plain, today, paving companies in Edmonton are also installing driveways keeping in mind their aesthetic appeal or design. Let’s take a look at a few options that you can use to create an attractive driveway for commercial or residential premises.

Concrete Driveway

Concrete is the most common and traditionally used material for various construction work, including driveways. This is because concrete driveways require less maintenance and last for a longer time. But, the drawback of using concrete is that stains are easily visible and they may get damaged in extremely cold weather.

Other than plain concrete driveways, you can even construct interlocking pavers and stamped concrete driveways. There are various stamp designs available to choose from to give your driveway a customized look.

Asphalt Driveway

Other than concrete, people mostly use asphalt to create their driveways. An asphalt driveway is a mixture of sand, rock, and liquid asphalt. The driveways created with asphalt have a rough texture and a blackish appearance. Because of this, stains are very rarely visible on driveways. Asphalt driveways are quite affordable but need frequent maintenance. However, the best part is that the maintenance of these driveways is quite simple. You just need to apply another layer of asphalt mixture to repair any cracks or holes.

Gravel Driveway

Gravel driveway has a rough surface. They are made by using very fine rock pieces. As these rocks are readily available, creating driveways with gravel is quite reasonable. But, to create this type of driveway, paving companies in Edmonton suggest that you create barriers on the edges so that the gravel stays in place. There are different colors of gravel available. So, you can have a colored driveway of your choice.

Cobblestone Driveway

Cobblestone has always been a great option to create attractive driveways. This type of driveway lasts for years and minor cracks or damages may make it look more fascinating. So, you do not have to worry about its maintenance when there are a few cracks or damages. There are various color options available to construct cobblestone driveways. But, using cobblestone to install driveways is quite expensive compared to other options.

Tar-and-Chip Driveway

Tar-and-chip driveways are not commonly used, but they provide great traction. Also, they are very affordable compared to other types of driveways. They include three-layers- gravel, tar, and stone. Although not very appealing, tar-and chip driveway requires very less maintenance.

Other than these, you can even go for other driveways like – glass, green, brick, exposed aggregate, etc. If you are planning to create an attractive driveway for your commercial or residential premises, do contact one of the paving companies. They are experienced and can help you install high-quality driveways.

Edmonton Acreage Driveway

How Do We Build An Edmonton Acreage Driveway?

Driveways are an essential part of your home exterior. An attractive driveway adds value to the exteriors of your house. But driveways are prone to wear and tear due to traffic load and weather conditions. So, if you wish to install an Edmonton Acreage Driveway, you want to make sure that it lasts long. With asphalt paving you can ensure it lasts for as long as 15 years. Being a durable and low-maintenance material, asphalt is the best choice for your driveway. The skill and equipment involved in the process calls for a professional asphalt paving service. But understanding the process will expose you to the benefits of an asphalt driveway. The steps involved in building an Edmonton Acreage Driveway include:

Clearing the Unusable Foundation

Paving over an existing driveway, especially if it is damaged, is not a great idea. It can lead your new driveway to crack easily. Before preparing the base, we first evaluate the driveway area and remove the old surface. This includes digging out loose gravel and any other soft material like clay. Grading is the next step, which is necessary to let the water run to the sides in order to prevent a collapsed driveway. With the help of a drum roller, the soil is then compacted.

Layering Crushed Rock

A properly installed base provides a strong foundation for the overall structure. After clearing the base of damaging materials, we add a layer of crushed rock. We use a base of crushed rock that compacts well to allow proper drainage. The base is then settled with a roller and allowed a week’s time to settle.

Laying the Asphalt

Once the base is prepared, we determine the size and thickness of the asphalt. Generally, the best thickness level is 2 to 3 inches. This depends on the surface and the weather conditions of the area. With the help of state of the art equipment a fresh batch of hot asphalt mix is layered.

Compact the Asphalt

Compacting the asphalt layer is a vital step. The asphalt will easily weaken without proper finishing. We see to it that it is done in the right weather conditions allowing it to compact neatly. Usually, a sunny weather is the best time to carry out the process. With the use of a drum roller, we compact the layer, after which the edges are hand tempered at 45 degree angle to provide the necessary strength to the pavement.

You get a rich and attractive looking Edmonton Acreage Driveway after completion of the above steps. An asphalt driveway that is well cared for can last even more than 15 years. Hence, we recommend maintenance services like seal-coating and crack sealing to be done at regular intervals. Blacktop Paving Inc specializes in acreage asphalt paving services to provide you with quality and durable asphalt driveway.

asphalt road maintenance

5 Tips for Asphalt Road Maintenance

Known for its strength and durability, asphalt is the most popular option for paving roads and driveways. However, roads are prone to degradation due to a variety of reasons. Temperature, harsh weather conditions, ineffective drainage system, and heavy traffic result in cracks and potholes, eventually degrading the road. While asphalt is known for surviving harsh temperatures and the heavy load, improper maintenance might reduce its lifespan. Hence, regular asphalt road maintenance is vital to reap the benefits of its long-lasting nature. We give you 5 tips for asphalt road maintenance.

1. Regular Inspection

While asphalt can survive heavy traffic, without proper maintenance a load of traffic can deteriorate your asphalt pavement. The best way is to reduce the load of heavy vehicles like garbage and delivery trucks on your driveway. However, that is not always possible. Hence, regular inspection is the best way to increase the span of your asphalt roads. Regular inspection allows timely detection and repair of any damage to the roads. You can hire asphalt maintenance service for regular inspection and repair.

2. Fix Drainage Problems

A poor drainage system can damage your road, costing you heavy repair or replacement. A poor drainage system allows water to reach the base surface and weaken it, resulting in cracks and potholes. Fixing these drainage problems by installing a drain inlet or underdrain may help. A good drainage system ensures a lasting asphalt road.

3. Snow and Ice Removal

During winters, the freeze-thaw cycle can crack your asphalt pavement. The accumulated water beneath the surface, resulting from the freeze-thaw cycle, combined with the weight of the traffic and high temperatures can degrade the road. Regular snow and ice removal is hence a vital requirement for maintaining asphalt roads. While you may not be able to regularly shovel snow, you must hire a professional snow and ice removal service for the best results.

4. Crack Filling and Sealcoating

If your asphalt roads have cracks, water can run through it and weaken the road. Moreover, heavy load of vehicles can also cause the cracks to widen. The crack filling can help combat this problem. It can be done by yourself, or you may hire a professional if the damage is severe. Sealcoating your asphalt surface every few years also helps in increasing its lifespan. It protects the surface from harmful elements and water seepage.

5. Sweeping

Apart from inspection and damage maintenance, regular cleaning also helps in maintaining your asphalt road. If not cleaned regularly, debris may accumulate within cracks and result in severe damage. Furthermore, regularly sweeping your asphalt pathways protect it from harmful elements. Hence, you must sweep your asphalt pavement on a regular basis to maintain its durability.

While asphalt is known for its long-lasting quality, all these asphalt road maintenance tips allow you to retain the strong and durable nature of asphalt. You can consult a professional asphalt paving service to help you with maintenance for your asphalt pavement.

Parking Lot Maintenance

5 Tips To Protect Your Parking Investment

Parking lot maintenance needs to be a part of your regular maintenance schedule whenever you carry out other maintenance checks in your office or house.

Here are a few tips that you could take into consideration for your parking lot maintenance.

1) Hire the best Quality Asphalt Contractor

Experienced and knowledgeable contractors know how to make the best quality parking lots. An experienced contractor knows how to build a parking lot which will cost less to maintain and have lower repair costs over the years. Hiring the best of the best in the industry will ensure that the life of your parking lot goes upto 30 years.

2) Maintain Proper Drainage

Drainage allows the water to channel away from your parking lot, so that it does not pool up and stay and form puddles on the surface. Over time, standing water will allow moisture to seep into the asphalt, causing the surface to break down and cracks to form. Having a proper drainage helps you maintain your parking lot and prolongs its lifespan.

3) Repair Cracks

If there are visible cracks on your parking lot, get them repaired immediately. Surface cracks appear from time to time. But if these cracks are repaired and dealt with in time, they are not able to cause extensive damage to your parking lot. Hire a professional contractor who could repair and seal with an approved sealant. Remember, if you notice any cracks from water damage, don’t ignore it.

4) Avoid Water Seepage

Asphalt deteriorates if water is allowed to seep in through the surface. Water is one of the most destructive causes of asphalt deterioration, especially in areas where it snows and rains excessively. In such cases, it is important to prevent the water from filtering through the asphalt into the foundation and layers of the structure underneath. A trusted and top quality sealcoat with the help of a professional would be the best option.

5) Cleanliness

Seal coating should be performed about every 3 years, but it’s important not to forget about other regular maintenance. Rocks, leaves and dirt can decrease the appearance of your driveway, but there are many other reasons why you should regularly sweep your parking lot. For one, removing this debris will also help you create a safe parking lot for the pedestrians to use it. It also helps prevent standing water and drainage problems.

If you maintain your parking lot, you can prolong its life. Also, a well maintained and clean parking space has a certain aesthetic value to it. With the help of a professional road construction firm, keep your parking lot in the best of conditions.

Paving For Better Roads In Schools

Canada has one of the highest literacy rates in the world with 97%. Our nation offers an excellent education quality to the residents with public schools being the primary form of education.

In 2014, the Government of Alberta decided to revamp and renovate Edmonton’s aging schools. A school’s education is only as good as the facilities and infrastructure it has.The Government of Alberta had set a massive 45 million dollar budget for a three year renovation plan of schools. One of the schools being renovated was Ross Sheppard High School.

The School Thunderbird Emblem

The school caters to the educational needs of over 2,000 students and one of its most notable alumni is Wayne Gretzky.

Blacktop Paving was subcontracted to assist the government in the renovation of the Ross Sheppard High School.

The Scope

Blacktop was hired to install a new parking lot, driving lanes, sidewalks, curbs and commercial crossings. Here are the challenges we faced:

  • Since we were part of a larger schedule, we had to thoroughly ensure that timelines were maintained

  • The school continued to run during the renovation project. This meant that we had to ensure that the students and staff still had easy access to the school and were able to park vehicles.

The Fix

Edmonton Paving

Coordinating closely with the contractors, the City of Edmonton and other subcontractors, we scheduled the work such that we strictly adhered to the project timeline. Constant communication was key to keep the work moving forward.

We put in extensive work hours to ensure that the paving was completed as soon as possible. We gave the Ross Sheppard school fresh pavement when the school opened by Monday.

The Continuation

The three year project will be completed at the end of 2016. We look forward to working the Government of Alberta and the City of Edmonton in bettering the infrastructure of our country.

Asphalt Driveway Cracks

Repairing The Cracks In Your Asphalt Driveway

Just like any other aspect of your property, the value of your asphalt driveway can also fade away with time due to excessive use. When an asphalt driveway is maintained poorly, it becomes inefficient and develops cracks and potholes.

Filling cracks in your asphalt driveway is also important when it comes to increasing its lifespan. If the cracks in your driveway are not taken care of timely, they can lead to unnecessary accidents as well as reduce the life of your existing asphalt. Moreover, if water seeps into these cracks, it can give rise to vegetation damaging the surface of your driveway permanently. Hence, if you spot any cracks on your drive, call a professional immediately to fix it. Here are a few tips on how to repair asphalt driveway cracks to get you started:

1) Clear the Dust

Before sealing the cracks, it is important to make sure that the affected area is as clean and smooth as possible so that the sealant adheres easily. Start the process by removing any broken piece of asphalt that is obstructing the cracks by using a hammer or a chisel. Once removed, use a wire brush to dislodge the debris inside the crack.

If all the dust inside the cracks of asphalt is removed, use a compressed air gun or a shop vac to get rid of all the loose or small dust particles on your driveway. If you do not have either an air gun or a shop vac or are not sure about its usage, it is recommended to consult a pavement expert to clean your driveway thoroughly and repair the cracks.

2) Seal the Cracks

If you are considering repairing the cracks with a sealant, use a self-adhesive asphalt repair seal. Sealing your driveway protects it from natural elements like UV rays that have the ability to damage your driveway. Hence, pour the sealant carefully on the cracks and use a trowel to smoothen the surface. Also, make sure that when you are wearing rubber gloves while applying the sealant. Once the application is complete, let the sealed area dry for a longer period of time.

3) Remove the Snow

Snow removal needs to be prompt, thorough and timely. Failure to do this can result in problems for your driveway that can further damage the asphalt. When snow is not removed on time, it starts melting and flows down the cracks of your driveway. If this water seeps into the surface, it re-freezes and stays there for a really long time. When there is moisture buildup in the cracks, the surface of your driveway starts eroding.

4) Hire a Professional

Driveway cracks are often caused due to irregular snow removal or heavy traffic that exerts tremendous pressure on the asphalt surface. If these asphalt cracks have become wide and deep and cannot be repaired by the application of a sealant, then it’s highly recommended to hire a professional to fix them as soon as possible. Making Roads For Our Oil

Alberta accounts for almost 79% of Canada’s oil production. However, the oil boom of the 80s has grown sluggish due to low oil production output and the oil price crash. NWR Sturgeon Refinery is trying to change all of that. The Sturgeon Refinery is the first refinery to be built in the last 30 years, and it’s only just completed its first phase of construction.

Blacktop Paving Inc. was more than glad to play a small, yet critical part of this journey.

NWR Sturgeon Refinery

With the oil industry is on a downturn in Alberta, NWR Sturgeon Refinery has infused new life into the industry. The Refinery is set for three phases and each phase will employ over 8,000 Albertans. The purpose of  the Sturgeon Refinery is to convert bitumen, which is low crude oil, into high-quality synthetic crude oil. Sturgeon Refinery is all set to process as much as 79,000 barrels per day.

Our Job

We were tasked with a crucial task of hardscaping the Central Administrative Building and the Firehall Warehouse with asphalt and concrete. The project required 14,500m2 of asphalt parking lot, 2100 lineal meters of curb and 2200m2 of concrete sidewalk and pads.

Time was a critical factor since both the Central Administrative Building and the Firehall Warehouse were essential for NWR Sturgeon Refinery to operate.

Safety

During any project, safety is always a priority to ensure that no one is injured due to the operation of heavy equipment. However, since NWR Sturgeon Refinery is deemed as a high risk industrial site, it demanded extreme and stringent safety expectations that even we weren’t adapted to.

The number of safety requirements threatened to interfere with our timeline. However, through good teamwork and coordination from site managers and employees, everyone fully embraced the stringent safety plan and stuck to it. Additional resources were assigned to this project to ensure sufficient equipment and materials were on site. A full-time HSE officer was assigned to the site and this allowed everyone to operate without getting bogged down in safety red-tape.

Completion

Even though the constant routine of the heightened safety procedure was new and tiring, the Blacktop Paving team quickly got used to it. The project was completed on time with no injury and without compromising on our high-quality work.

Asphalt Driveway Repair

How Do You Prevent Asphalt Damage?

Asphalt is one of the toughest materials to use in construction of your driveway. But even the toughest can be broken when subjected to natural forces. If you have observed rocks on the riverside, you will see that they have been withered away due to the water splashing across them constantly.

How do you prevent asphalt from cracking? Here are a few ideas to help you prevent your asphalt from getting damaged.

Prevent Water Damage

To prevent your asphalt from cracking, the best thing to do is to prevent water intrusion through or under the pavement as much as possible. Water is susceptible to freezing and thawing, which prematurely damages the pavement. Try to get good drainage away from the driveway as well. Your paving contractor can help with this as they are going through the paving process. Do not let water collect on your driveway.

Clear the Way

As mentioned above, to keep your pavement intact, it is important to move rain or flood water off the surface and into the drains as fast as possible. To accomplish this, remove debris from pavement and clear out blocked drains. It is also crucial to check and correct pavement slopes and flow lines to ensure asphalt driveway safety.

Level the Field

No, not the playing field but your driveway. You want your pavement and the people who walk on it to be safe. Your parking lot should be free of dips, depressions, and potholes that not only allow further water damage, but could also cause someone to trip and fall. Different types of solutions are available. It will depend on the root cause of the damage and also the type of environment you reside in. You will need the help of a professional contractor in this case.

Fixes? Maybe

If there are cracks in the pavement, seal them as needed. Sealcoating periodically will help keep the elements from oxidizing the surface. However, do not over-seal, as that will reduce the life of the pavement. Sealcoat only when the previous sealcoat is worn off by traffic to a point where significant portions of the bare pavement below the sealcoat are showing.

If There is a Lot of Damage

If your pavement still looks worn out, it may be time to think about replacing the asphalt. A lot of times, there are problems with the structure or there are problems with the foundation. Depending on the cause, you may have to replace the asphalt if it stops functioning mechanically, meaning it does not drain properly, is bumpy, or there is too much settling.

Contact a professional who will be able to repair your driveway if you have potholes or cracks developing. Avoid DIYing your asphalt driveway repair because it will be troublesome and apart from that, you may commit some mistake which might cost you your time and money.
